THE SATYR

The web-magazine Satyyri is a collective endeavour, which brings together artists and writers from all over Finland. The magazine tries to create an arena where different kinds of people have the opportunity to express themselves and disclose their talents. The subjects of the magazine vary from art to prose to movie critique and analysis of literature, and all the material published is free of charge and meant to support and entertain the cultural society.

The origin of the word Satyyri derives from ancient Greek mythology, where satyrs were man-like daemons or spirits of the woodlands, who accompanied deities like Dionysos and Gaia. The main characteristics of the race are playfulness and joy, and satyrs are often associated with fertility and male sex drive, as they used to sport with the nymphs in the wild. Furthermore, as the various plays of antiquity portray, satyrs had a light-hearted approach even the to the most dire situations. Alike all other divine beings of the early times, satyrs were greatly feared by man, but they also fascinated great poets like Aeschylus, who is said to have deeply loved his satyr plays.

Casting that aside, as a web-magazine Satyyri is aiming to act as intermediate between the different sections of culture, a hub where diverse ways of thinking and expressing may collide and merge. The web-magazine is just taking its first steps, but it has already combined a company of traditional artists, photographers, poets, critics and literacy enthusiasts of different age, sex and social status.

There have also been obstacles. Satyyri did not start out as Satyyri at all but as Kuiskaaja (double meaning for prompter / whisperer). However, it was soon revealed that there was a business operating by the same name in Finland, which sought to end the usage of the name once and for all. It was due to this that Satyyri was born.

The future will bring about the development of Satyyri. I hope that the crew will listen to the viewers and try to invent new ways to draw boundaries further. The group itself is in rapid growth, and new talents and personalities are joining the movement all the time. It is relieving that culture has such an immense support among younger age groups in Finland today.

The field of culture, art and entertainment is vast, beautiful, ever intriguing - and that is exactly where we’ll be.
